How Sayre Health Center Became Stronger:

A Story About Staying Healthy

In West Philadelphia, there is a health center called Sayre. It helps people feel better when they are sick. But the leaders at Sayre wanted more. They didn’t just want to treat sickness—they wanted to stop it before it started.

A long time ago in China, doctors were paid only if their patients stayed healthy. If people got sick, the doctors did not get paid. These doctors worked hard to teach people how to eat better, stay clean, and avoid getting sick. This helped their whole community live longer, healthier lives.

The leaders at Sayre Health Center thought, 'What if we did the same thing here?' They wanted to focus on helping patients stay well. So, they started looking at important goals—like making sure people got their blood pressure checked, their cancer screenings done, and their vaccines on time.

The nurses called patients to remind them of their appointments. The doctors made sure to talk about wellness at every visit.

Soon, good things started to happen. More people got their mammograms. More patients with diabetes had better blood sugar levels. More people got their flu shots. Fewer people were ending up in the hospital.

Now, Sayre is known as a place that doesn’t just help when you’re sick—it helps you *stay* healthy. This change didn’t happen by magic. It happened because the staff worked together and believed that every patient deserves to live a healthy life.

And so, Sayre Health Center became stronger by doing what really matters—helping people stay well.
